Obituary of John Burns Windsor Jr.

John Burns Windsor Jr., 87, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Thursday, August 6th, 2020, at The Waters of Johnson City. He was a native and lifelong resident of Fairmont, West Virginia, the only son of the late John Burns Windsor and Doris Helen Johnson Windsor. He moved to Johnson City, TN, in recent years to be nearer to family. John attended college at West Virginia University, where he earned his Bachelor of Political Science Degree and began a lifelong relationship with the school. While attending, he was a member and then president of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and acted as president of the Interfraternity Council. Once he had graduated, John often returned to watch the Mountaineers on the football field. He married Elizabeth M. “Betty” Wood on August 13, 1960, and spent the next 60 years by her side. They attended Saint Peter The Fisherman Roman Catholic Church together for many years. Family was above all else in John’s life, and he will always be remembered for the pillar he was to them. Outside of his dedication to family, John was also a very active member of his community. He had acted respectively as President, Treasurer, and as a Board of Directors member for the Mountaineer Area Council of The Boy Scouts of America. He was an emeritus member of the Fairmont State College Board of Directors, had acted as president of the Marion County chapter of the American Red Cross, and was also President of his Rotary Club. His commitment to hard work extended even further in his career, where John worked as an agent for Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1957 until his retirement. He obtained his Chartered Life Underwriter certification in 1971. He received the 30 Year National Quality Award from the National Association of Life Underwriters, and was also a member of the Million Dollar Round Table for 10 years. During his career, John had acted as president of the Fairmont Association of Life Underwriters and of the Northcentral West Virginia Association of Chartered Life Underwriters. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by one son, John Burns Windsor III. Those surviving him include his wife, Betty Wood Windsor; children, Paul Windsor and wife Jeannie, Elizabeth Thompson and husband Tim; and grandchild, Will Sams. Friends and family may visit at the Ford Funeral Home, R. C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont WV on Sunday, August 9, 2020, from 1PM to 3PM, and from 5PM to 7PM respectively.
