Obituary of Edward "Eddie" Allen Hammond

Edward “Eddie” Allen Hammond, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Bridgeport, WV surrounded by his family on Thursday September 29, 2022. He was born on July 28, 1938 in a home on Gregorys Run in Harrison County, WV to his late parents Evert and Zelma Hammond. For those who knew him, knew him for his faith in God, giving spirit, sense of humor, loyalty and great ability to tell a story. He is survived by his children Craig Hammond, Terri Hammond Dotson (Michael), Chad Hammond (Jennifer) and grandchildren Patrick and Sean, his wife Donna (Southern Johnson Lopez) Hammond, married March 2020, her children David Johnson (Lynn), Dean Johnson, Deborah Johnson Ruiz (Ray), Vicki and Greg Lacy. Denise Johnson (deceased), and multiple grandchildren and Great grandchildren. His brother Robert “Bob” (Donna) and their children David (Taryn and children Madison and Nolan), Gordan (Chas), and Rebecca Hammond Rhodebeck (Matt and children Latasha and Dorothy). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2015 by his wife of 54 years Elizabeth “Liz” Grow Hammond. He grew up on the family dairy farm, was involved in 4-H and won State competitions for his strawberries, ham and bacon. He was also a member of Boys State. He grew up with an extended family of cousins that he loved like brothers and sisters. He graduated from Lumberport High School in 1956 and later attended West Virginia University. He was an Army veteran and served as a platoon sergeant stationed at Fort Knox as a tank commander. He was the president of the Lions Club while living in Marietta, OH, and a member of the Kiwanis Club in Bridgeport, WV. He had a successful 30-year career with River/Hope/CNG gas companies working in the Marketing Dept. He was a faithful member of the Bridgeport United Methodist Church. He was honored to service as a member of the Administration Board and was part of the Lay Ministry. He was an avid golfer and outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing. Later in life he gained most enjoyment by spending time watching his grandsons play sports and spending time with them in the outdoors. Ed will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Services to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday October 22, 2022 at Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the church from 10am-12pm with memorial service at 12:30pm. Graveside services will be held immediately following Memorial services at the Bridgeport Cemetery.
