Obituary of Dorothy Mae Layman Swiger

Dorothy Mae Layman Swiger, 96, of Montana Mines, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Fairmont Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born January 29, 1924 in Montana Mines a daughter of the late John Jacob and N. Ruth Curry Layman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul H. Swiger in 1961. Dorothy was a member of the Montana Mines United Methodist Church and was a proud alumnus of East Fairmont High School having graduated in 1941. She worked locally throughout her life, having served with Page’s Bakery, the Moose Lodge, the Eagles Club, and Sarge’s Derby. Dorothy enjoyed her time with the women crafties at Doris Wilson’s. If she wasn’t there, she could be found at Wal-Mart buying more yarn. She enjoyed knitting and belonged to several knitting clubs. She also enjoyed tending her flowers, as they brought much joy to her day. The Montana Mines community was an important part of Dorothy’s life, as she was born there and continued to live her entire life within Montana Mines. She was a member of the Montana Mines Homemakers Club, a lifetime member of the Montana Community Association (MIA), and a lifetime member of the Women of the Moose. Survivors include her children, Karen S. and Guy Leonard of Fairmont, Judith A. and Jimmy Manning of Florida, and Paul and Sandra Swiger of Fairmont, her son-in-law, Randy Sheets of Fairmont, and her daughter-in-law, Sharon Swiger of Kentucky. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren: Fred Leonard, Nancy Espinoza, Marie Lockhart, Sherry Tonkery, Scott Guthrie, James Manning, Stephanie Spevock, Steven Swiger, Cindy Drummond, Lisa Bishop, Carla Dunn, and Randy Sheets , several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, her brother Richard and Clara Layman of Ohio, her sisters, Phyllis Monday of Bridgeport, and Bonnie and Lewis Jr. Davis of Fairmont, as well as many special nieces and nephews, and her close friend Helen Spevock. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Bradley G. Swiger, her daughter, Deborah J. Sheets, her infant sister, her brothers, James, Albert, and Bob, Layman, and her grandsons, Michael Guthrie and Chad Manning The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Should you be able to celebrate her life, the family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, on Sunday, October 25, 2020 from 4PM until 8PM and on Monday, October 26, 2020 from 10AM until 11AM. The funeral will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11AM with Reverend Jim Zinn and Mr. Randy Vincent officiating. Interment will follow at the Montana Mines Cemetery in Montana Mines.
