Obituary of Alene C. Russell

Alene C. Russell, age 100, of Morningside Drive, Fairmont, left her earthly home on May 2, 2020 to be with loved ones who had gone before. Alene was born June 27, 1919 in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Bryce and Mrytle Cummins. She was married to the late Robert W. Russell, Jr. They had four children, Robert Russell, III (Judy) who reside in Thousand Oaks, California, William Russell who was her caregiver and resides in Fairmont, Carolyn Shimskey (Don) who reside in Painesville, Ohio and Barbara Wilson (James) who are deceased. Her grandchildren are Leanna Eaton (Christopher) of Oxford, North Carolina, Joel Wilson of South Carolina, Eric Wilson (Lydia) of Owensboro, Kentucky, Donna Sili (Michael) of Perry, Ohio, Robert Russell, IV (Browyn) of Umina Beach, Australia, and Gregory Russell (Tesa) of Alabama. She is also survived by 15 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. All who could joined with Alene and the community to celebrate her 100th birthday in June, 2019. Alene was a member of the Fleming Memorial Presbyterian Church where she was an Elder. When she was able, she was an active member of her church. Alene loved to travel and had visited all 50 states of the USA. She had been on every continent except for Antarctica. She collected mementos from all the places she has traveled. Alene was an avid sports fan and her favorite baseball team was the Pittsburgh Pirates. She even attended spring training when she was able. While her children were in high school, she attended every football game home or away. Later in her life, she enjoyed watching football, basketball, and baseball at the high school, college, and the professional level. Alene worked at the Marion County House, beginning in the Sheriff’s Office and retired from the Assessor’s Office. She had a soft spot in the heart of “Her Boys” who she supervised each year as they did evaluations and reevaluations of property. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Alene’s memory to Fleming Memorial Church, 1493 Locust Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554, or to the Marion County Special Olympics, 102 Benoni Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554. A memorial service will be held at Fleming Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1493 Locust Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554, on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Rebecca Mihm officiating.
