Obituary of Freda Hamilton Hughes

Freda June Glenn Hamilton Hughes, 93, of Pleasant Valley, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2018 in Roxboro, NC, surrounded by her family.  She was born December 29, 1924 in Wendel, WV a daughter of the late John Francis and Elizabeth Lintz Glenn.  She was preceded in death by both her first husband, Theodore “Ted” Y. Hamilton as well as her second husband, Edward Robert Hughes.

Freda was a member of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church and a former member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.  She was a 1942 graduate of Flemington High School at the age of 16.  Freda retired in 1990 from Electronic Control Systems with 23 years of service in the assembly and wiring department where she made electronic circuit boards.  She began her career with American Viscos in Parkersburg during World War II where she worked on the yarn spinning reels, she later worked in the tube plant of Westinghouse, then became a homemaker in her own home while raising her children, and later worked for Stanley Home Products as a direct seller.

Freda was a Sunday School teacher at both churches served on the administrative council, sang in the choir, participated in several women’s organizations, and belonged to the adult fellowship.  In the past, she had enjoyed participating in bowling leagues at the Mid City Bowling Alley.  She was a member of the Lifelong Learners and was proud she had been a past Girl Scout Leader with her daughters’ troops.

Freda is survived by her daughters: Linda S. and her husband Ed Stalnaker of Fairmont, Charlotte A. and her husband Wayne Thomann of Chapel Hill, NC, and Sandra L. and her husband Danny Phillips of Roxboro, NC, her step-son, Christopher A. and his wife Jane Hughes of Freeport, OH, her sister, Margaret  Beverly Miller, grandchildren: Christopher and his wife Katherine Phillips, Melissa and her husband Nate Haines, Stacey and her husband Tony Hamilton, Shannon Thomann, Ryan Thomann, Todd Thomann, and Kurt Stalnaker, step-grandchildren: Jonathan Stalnaker, Jason Stalnaker, Jodi Everhart, Betsie Walker, and Katie Hughes Mitson, as well as numerous great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her infant son, John Thomas Hamilton, her brother, John Hamilton Glenn, sisters, Evelyn F. Blake, Elizabeth Hess, Helen M. Leon, and Norma R. Powell Lough.

Friends and family may call the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 2PM until 4PM and 6PM until 8PM, and on Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 10AM until 11AM.  The funeral will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 11AM with Pastor Scott Krepps officiating.  Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover, WV.  Online condolences may be made to www.fordfuneralhomes.com.
