Obituary of Irene Zaccagnino Martino

Irene Zaccagnino Martino, 96, of Newton, North Carolina and formerly of Fairmont, WV died Saturday, November 10, 2018 in the Carillon Assisted Living in Newton, NC.  She was born July 14, 1922 in Bagnola Del Trigna Province of De Combasso, Italy a daughter of the late Angelo Zaccagnino and Teresa Dimario Zaccagnino.  She was preceded in death by her husband Dominick Frank Martino on April 4, 2001.

She is survived by two sons and two daughter in laws John & Terri Martino of Morganton, NC and Michael & Amy Martino of Cranberry Township, PA, a sister Lena Pilla of Youngstown, Ohio, five grandchildren Tricia Martino Hogan & her husband Scott Hogan, Jona Martino Fitzgerald & her husband Hunt Fitzgerald, Jay Martino & his wife Mailee , Nicholas Martino & his wife Jennifer and Angela Martino Kweder & her husband Christopher Kweder, eleven great grandchildren Gavin Zaye Martino, Elliot Chang Martino, Evan Touger Martino, Cecilia Teague Fitzgerald, Layla Brantley Fitzgerald, Rhys Huntington Fitzgerald, Gwen Christine Kweder, Jack Michael Kweder, Arianna Joan Martino, Dominick Michael Martino & Myla Christine Martino.

Mrs. Martino came to this country with her mother at the early age of five years old.  She was raised and educated in Fairmont on the East Side, attending Central Elementary and graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1941.  As a young girl Irene worked at McCrory’s Five & Dime Store and for Community Hardware.  After her marriage, she and her husband owned & operated Martino Grocery Store in the Watson Community of Fairmont.  She was a devoted mother and grandmother.  Mrs. Martino enjoyed crocheting many items for family & friends and gardening.  She was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fairmont and the Saint Teresa’s Guild.

The family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554 Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 4-7 p.m.  The visitation will continue on Friday, November 16, 2018 in the St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1660 Mary Lou Retton Drive, Fairmont, WV 26554 from 9:30 a.m.-10:15 a.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the church Friday at 10:30 a.m. with Father Vincent Joseph, Celebrant.  The committal service will follow in the Mt.
