Obituary of Shirley J. Stanton

Shirley J. Stanton, 84, went to be with the Lord on July 27, 2018. She was born April 16, 1934, in Enterprise, WV, to Alston B. Champ and Lena Poling Golden, both deceased.

Shirley was a 1951 graduate of Shinnston High School; a 1954 graduate of Fairmont State College, and a 1972 graduate of University of Maryland Law School. In 1979 she established the law firm of Stanton and Stanton, along with her husband G. Patrick Stanton, Jr., whom she married in 1956.

Shirley was past president of the Marion County Bar Association. She taught at East Fairmont High School and later was a member of the Marion County Board of Education when the present East Fairmont High School was constructed. She was general counsel for the Republican Woman’s Club of Maryland. She was a member of the South Fairmont Rotary. She was appointed by Governor Underwood as a judge on the Worker’s Compensation Appeal Board and by Governor Manchin to the Board of Governors of Fairmont State University. She was voted an outstanding alumna of Fairmont State in 1996 and was a member and past president of the Gamma Chi Chi Sorority Association.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 62 years, G. Patrick Stanton; her brother, Alston Theodore Champ of Philadelphia, PA; two sons, George Patrick Stanton III of Fairmont and E. Scott Stanton of Summersville, WV; grandchildren, Christina Gouzd (John) of Grafton, Stephanie A. Stanton of Richmond, VA, George Patrick Stanton IV of Wheeling, WV, Michael P. Tustin (Amber) of Bridgeport, Selby A. McClung (Zack) of Summersville and E. Kent Stanton of Greenville, SC; and three great grandchildren, Harper Jane McClung, Eliza A. Goudz and John K. Goudz.

Shirley was a Christian by faith and a member of Christ Community Church (Presbyterian Church in America).

The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at 1 p.m. A committal service will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery & Mausoleum.
