Obituary of Rachel Louise Hawkins

Rachel Louise Hawkins, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at St. Barbara’s Nursing Home. Rachel was born on June 12, 1920, the daughter of Reefer Rebecca (Huffman) Schultz and Charles Goetleib Schultz. She married Ensel J. Hawkins, Jr. on October 4, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1969.

Rachel was a life-long resident of Fairmont, being born in the coal mining community of Watson. She graduated from Fairmont Senior High School in 1938. She worked for First Federal Savings & Loan and later retired from Barrack Motor Company.

Rachel enjoyed bowling and the many friends she met through bowling. She received a plaque in Tuscon, AZ in 2005 for bowling in her 25th National Bowling Tournament. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and missed her visits to Illinois when she could no longer travel.

Survivors include daughter, Jeannie (David) Caldwell of The Villages, FL and son, Charles E. Hawkins of Fairmont and Deep Creek, Maryland. Three grandchildren, Diana (Ben) Woodruff of St. Louis, MO; J.D. (Tammy) Caldwell, Murphysboro, IL and Darrin Caldwell, Daytona Beach, FL. Four great-grandchildren: Brandon and Drew Caldwell, Murphysboro, IL and Payton and Reece Woodruff, St. Louis, MO.

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother and sister-in-law Charles E. (Agnes) Schultz, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Mickey (Hawkins) and Carl Hess.

As per Rachel’s wishes her body will be cremated and a private service will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.
