Obituary of James Michael "Mike" Smith

James Michael “Mike” Smith, 68, of Fairmont, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born on June 4, 1956 in Fairmont, a son of the late James C. and Ruth V. Richardson Smith. Mike was a proud 1974 graduate of East Fairmont High School and a former member of Diamond Street United Methodist Church (now recognized as Gateway UMC). He was also the proud owner and operator of Warehouse Grocery and Colo’s Frozen Pizza in Fairmont. During his high school years, Mike was a member of the wrestling team, where he was a known state qualifier. He also found enjoyment in playing softball and bowling during his younger years. Mike loved living on the Tygart River throughout the majority of his life, where he enjoyed boating with his friends and family. He loved his dogs and enjoyed a simple life. Mike is survived by his beloved son, JC Smith and his fiancé Hannah Murphy of Morgantown, sisters, Ginny Layton and her husband George of Fairmont, and Mary Spickler and her husband Dave of Myrtle Beach, uncle, Tom Smith and his wife Joyce of Atlanta, GA, four nephews, cousins, David, Patty Robin, Susie, and many more. He will also be remembered by his group of great friends. The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Friends will be received on Friday, November 1, 2024 from 2 pm until 7pm and again on Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 10 am until 11 am. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 11 am with Reverend Nici Masters officiating. A service of committal will follow at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
