Obituary of David Lee Cross
David Lee Cross passed away early Sunday morning, July 21, 2024. He was born June 18, 1931 to Hazel Gladys and Fredward Clay Cross on Cherry Street in Bridgeport, WV.
Dave married the love of his life Peggy Joyce Moodispaugh on June 26, 1954, at East Clarksburg Baptist Church. They met on a blind date through Dave’s cousin Jim Nichols and Peggy’s friend Mary Ann Musrock and married six months later. After 69 years of marriage, we hope Peggy has garnered enough support for her beloved husband to join her in heaven.
Preceding Dave in death were his parents; his half-sister, Charlotte Sahm, and her husband Squeak; brothers-in-law, Jack Hill and Gary Moodispaugh; and sister-in-law Patty Jean Corder.
In addition to his younger brother Robert Cross, Dave is survived by his daughter Debra (Kelly) Nelson and their children, Nicholas David Dawkins (Stacie Aliff), Cameron Matthew Nelson (Bianca Andre), and Connor McKenzie Nelson (fiancé, Victoria Stingo). He is also survived by his son David Lee Cross II and his children, Holden David Cross (Abby) and Peyton Leigh Cross; as well as Chris Dawkins and Beth (Dawkins) Fox, the grandchildren of his heart.
Dave loved his grandchildren dearly including his three great-grandchildren, Adaleia, Eliana, and Judah Cross. Also surviving are his loving daughters-in-law, Jackie Cross and Heather Cross; brother-in-law, Lynn Corder; and sisters-in-law, Betty Cross and Carole Moodispaugh.
Dave worked at Clarksburg Wholesale Drug Company upon graduating from Victory High School. He enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan for two years. Upon discharge, Dave returned to West Virginia and Clarksburg Drug, performing numerous jobs throughout the years, eventually advancing to Vice President of Operations. After Ohio Valley Drug acquired the company, he served as a consultant and was responsible for opening the eastern markets of Maryland, DC, and Virginia. Dave continued with Cardinal Health when it assumed ownership in 1990 and remained there until he retired in 1996, marking 48 years in the business.
Upon his retirement, Dave went to work with the WV District of SCORE, a resource partner for the Small Business Administration. Beginning in 2008, he served a five-year term as District Director.
Dave lived a life of service to others. He was a member of the Bridgeport JC’s and Rotary International; President of Bridgeport District 753 (1981-82); and Chairman of the Polio Plus International Program (1988). For years, Dave enjoyed helping local needy children by volunteering with Medbrook Children’s Charity. He was a member of Simpson Creek Baptist Church. He was a past member of the American Legion, VFW, and the NRA.
David and Peggy loved traveling. They never tired of hosting and attending parties with their many friends. Over the years, he took pride in his never-ending parade of cars, boats, and motorcycles and made a hobby of keeping them in excellent condition. He also loved gardening and working in his yard.
Dave will be truly missed by so many, but he lived a full and wonderful life. He was, without a doubt, much blessed.
The family would like to thank Amanda Murphy Village caregivers for many years of wonderful love and care. As well as Alyssa Jenkins, his hospice nurse over the past many years. Thank you to Hospice for all they have done and the other caregivers who have been there for us.
