Obituary of Dorothy Brown

Dorothy Brown, 95, of Grant Town passed away on December 7, 2023 at the Tygart Center in Fairmont. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 15, 1928, a daughter of the late R.C. and Ophelia Brown. The family relocated to West Virginia and became integrated to the Grant Town community. She is survived by her brother R.C. Brown Jr., her sister, Geneva Taylor, nieces and nephews: Roger Brown of St. Louis MO, Darryl Avery (Brenda) of Teaneck, NJ, Kimberly White (Tony) of Chicago, IL, Carol Wilkinson (Frank) of Brooklyn, NY , Brian Taylor (Vicky) of Orlando, FL, Terrance Taylor of Long Island, NY, and Suzanne Revel (Sean) of Atlanta, GA along with several great-nieces, nephews, and her special friends: Francine Gillespie (Richard) of Grant Town, WV, and Evelyn Tucker of Grant Town, WV. Dorothy is also survived by a very close and special cousin, Betty Warren, who was more of a sister to Dorothy than a cousin. In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her brother, Hosley Brown, and two sisters, Josie Avery, and Lola Brown. Dorothy was a Christian by faith and a long-standing member of the Mt. Beulah Baptist Church in Grant Town. Following her graduation from Dunbar High School, Dorothy worked in retail at Winkelmans Department Store in Detroit, Michigan where she was employed for most of her working career. She returned to Grant Town, WV as her parents were ailing and assisted them until they passed. Dorothy enjoyed reading, and was active in several areas at Mt Beulah Baptist Church serving as Financial Secretary, Trustee, and proudly taught Sunday school, as well as worked in the church mission. Beulah Baptist Church on Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. A funeral will be held in the church on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 12 p.m. with Pastor Robert Daniels officiating. A service of committal will follow at Enterprise Cemetery in Enterprise, WV.
