Obituary of William Keith Layman Sr.
William Keith Layman Sr. of Fairmont, West Virginia passed away at his residence at the age of 62. He was born June 4, 1954 in Fairmont, WV a son of Shirley Hamrick Layman of Fairmont, WV & the late James Earl Layman. He grew up in the Bellview Community and graduated from Fairmont Senior High School.
Bill enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam era. He was stationed in Germany as a personnel specialist. After his military service, he enrolled in the West Virginia Career College and received an associate’s degree in Business Administration. He held positions with several companies in his working years.
Bill was employed at Universal Systems in Fairmont, WV as an office manager and at Capital Wire & Fence in Hyattesville, MD as an assistant comptroller. Returning to Fairmont, he held the position of accountant at Industrial Resources Inc. He received a degree in welding and worked at Harrison Conveyor in Harrison County until an accident led him to retire. He returned to school to pursue a degree at Fairmont State University and was one semester away from completing his bachelor’s degree. Bill was known for his artistic talents, especially his whittling and carving. While at Fairmont State University an elective class gave Bill a love for pottery and he made many beautiful pieces that he shared with friends and family. He most loved working with his hands, especially in his garden, which he also shared with neighbors and friends. Bill was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his favorite place, Valley Falls State Park.
Bill was a Christian and while growing up attended and was a member of the Highlawns United Methodist Church in Rivesville, WV.
Bill is survived by his mother, his sons William Keith & his wife Malissa of Fairmont, WV James Joseph & his wife Sarah of Arlington, VA and Lindsay Thomas of Morgantown, WV, four grandchildren Tyler of Morgantown, WV, Jadyn of Ft. Campbell, KY and Juliana & Izaac of Fairmont, WV, his brother Robert and his fiancé Terri Turner of Fairmont, WV and his sister Rebecca Adkins and her husband Jerry of New Martinsville, WV. He is also survived by a special Aunt Lydia L. McCue and her husband John of Charleston, WV and several nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts. Bill was preceded in death by his grandparents Howard & Harriette Layman and Marvin & Ada Hamrick. He loved his family dearly and was loved beyond measure.
The family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554 on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Stanley Merrifield and Reverend Amanda Reed officiating. The committal service will follow in the Arnettsville Cemetery in Monongalia County, WV. Full Military Honors will be held at graveside by the Military Veterans Council of Marion County.
