Obituary of Dorothy B. Schwarm Powelson
Dorothy B. Schwarm Powelson, 92, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at the Broaddus Hospital. She was born on November 28, 1930 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Oscar J. and Blanche Hodil Schwarm. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, William James Powelson Jr.
She is survived by her two sons, Jeffrey (Jacqueline) Powelson of Philippi, WV and Dr. Robert (Beth) Powelson of Shinnston, WV; four grandchildren, Michael (Maria) Powelson, Leslie (Reverend Kevin) Magee, Amy (Derek) Patrick, and Julie (Reverend Andrew) Tennant; and seven great grandchildren, Harper Magee, Hayden Magee, Charlie Powelson, Jacqueline Powelson, Luna Tennant, Esther Tennant, and Reid Patrick.
Dorothy was a faithful member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church, where she was actively involved in the Women’s Club, Circle, and managing rummage sales. She also played the piano for the Maplewood Sunday Service. Upon graduating from Presbyterian Nursing School, she worked as a Registered Nurse.
In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, gardening, reading, and playing “Bridge”. She especially enjoyed activities with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Maplewood and Broaddus Hospital for their love and care. A special thanks to Mildred, Danielle, and the Rehab Staff at Broaddus Hospital.

The Powelson family has entrusted the arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV. Friends will be received at Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, WV on Friday from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM. The funeral service will be celebrated in the church on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 11:00 AM with Reverend Dr. Matthew Paugh and Reverend Dr. Dale Waters presiding. The interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery, Bridgeport, WV. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.fordfuneralhomes.com.
