Obituary of Amelia JoAnn Lake

Amelia JoAnn Lake, 84, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 13, 2023. She was born on April 18, 1939, in Fairmont, a daughter of the late Milford and Ocie Motter McVicker. JoAnn was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Dennis Ray Lake. Dennis Ray Lake, 86, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2023, in Schenectady, New York. He was born on May 29, 1936, in Fairmont, a son of the late Claude and Dessie Hawkins Lake. JoAnn and Dennis are survived by their children, Dennis Gregg Lake, Eric Lake and his wife Kimberly, Kimberly Chappell and her husband Bill, Lisa Dickson, and Debbie Loreman. JoAnn is also survived by three brothers, Jerry McVicker, Charles “Doug” McVicker, and Larry McVicker, as well as three sisters, Carolyn Haught, Pam Pride, and Cindy Levelle. In addition to their children, Dennis is survived by three sisters, Dorris Yost, Lorraine Estle, and Janet Linn. JoAnn and Dennis are also survived by nine grandchildren, Jennifer Chappell, Lindsay Henning, Karl Wagner, Nicole Hartman, Alexis Dickson, Matthew Loreman, Ashley Briscoe, Sophia Lake, and Macy Lake, as well as ten great grandchildren, Adelissa Chappell, Landon Henning, Claire Henning, Hayden Wagner, Katie Loreman, Payton Loreman, Aryana Briscoe, Brooke Detwiler, Issac Hartman, and Amelia Detwiller. Dennis was a proud 1955 graduate of East Fairmont High School. He faithfully served in the Army from 1958-1962, fighting in the Korean War. He was also a District Manager with the McCrory’s Department Store. He was patriotic at heart, as he created his own flagpole to proudly display the American Flag at his home. JoAnn was a proud 1957 graduate of East Fairmont High School. She worked as a long-distance operator with the C&P Telephone Company. She was a Methodist by faith. In their younger days, JoAnn and Dennis both enjoyed traveling together. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and making precious memories with her grandchildren, as they were her world. JoAnn was preceded in death by a brother, Gene McVicker and Dennis was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Kirby and Velma Conner, and a brother, Archie Lake. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the loving care of the nurses and staff at WVU Hospice and Amedisys Home Health.
