Obituary of Helen Pauline Ford Nuzum

Helen Pauline Ford Nuzum, 96, of Colfax, passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Fazio’s Elder Care surrounded by her family. She was born in Fairmont, WV, on July 15, 1926, a daughter of the late Joseph F. Ford and Lillie Carpenter Ford. She was a proud 1944 graduate of East Fairmont High School and a graduate of Fairmont State University where she was a member of the Gamma Chi Chi Sorority and a member of the Emeritus Club. Helen was a 68-year member of the Morgan Morgan Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) where she served as Regent from 1983-1986. She was a member of the Baptist Temple and attended Gateway United Methodist Church. Helen worked for the West Virginia University Extension Service as an extension agent in St. Marys, WV. She continued her home economics career as a teacher at Miller School and later as a social studies teacher at East Fairmont High School until her retirement in 1989. She is survived by her son, David Alden Nuzum II (JoAnn); her granddaughter, Blaire Elizabeth Nuzum-Wise (Josh); her grandson, David Joseph Nuzum; her great-grandson, Shepherd Alden Wise; and her great-granddaughter, Merritt Elizabeth Wise. She is also survived by several very special nieces and nephews: JoAnna White (Jim), Nancy Rae Springer (Norman), Joseph F. Ford (Karen), Delbert “Butch” Phillips, Patricia VanGilder (Steve), William H. Ford (Patty), Raymond Jay Ford (Drema), and Bradley A. Ford (Carol). In addition, Helen leaves behind many great-nieces and great-nephews as well as several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, David Alden Nuzum; her brothers Joseph Ford, William Ford, and Raymond Ford; her sisters-in-laws Wilma Ford, Anna Lee Ford, and Nancy Reed; and her nieces Rebecca Ford Phillips and Paula Ford Miller. The Nuzum family would like to thank the staff of Fazio’s Elder Care and the staff of Amedisys Hospice for the loving care and friendship that they provided for Helen over the past three years. In lieu of flowers and for her love of East Fairmont High School, memorial donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the East Fairmont High School Foundation, 1993 Airport Road, Fairmont, WV 26554. The family has entrusted arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 5 PM until 8 PM, and on Friday, February 17, 2023, from 11 AM until 2 PM. The funeral will be held in the funeral home on Friday, February 17, 2023, at 2 PM with Pastor Grace Langenstein officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
