Obituary of Philip Lewis Martin

Mr. Philip Lewis Martin, of Bridgeport, WV left this life on January 12, 2022 after an extended illness, and 92 years of life well lived. He was born on July 12, 1929 in Huntington, WV, to parents William Ernest Martin and Lureata Ross Martin. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Emily Dudley “Jakie” Martin, his parents and his older brother, Jack R. Martin of Grosse Point Woods, MI Philip, also known as Phil or Pete, is survived by a daughter Ann Wanstreet and husband Mark of Clarksburg; grandson Tyler Wanstreet and his wife Rebecca, and their children Jack and Katherine Wanstreet; and granddaughter Kerry Musgrave and her husband Preston of Monterey, CA. Also surviving are niece Ellen Martin of Grosse Point Woods, MI; niece Anne Moiseev of Springfield, NJ and her children Robbie and Laura. Phil graduate from Huntington High School, attended Hanover College in Indiana, where he discovered the second love of his life, geology, and then transferred to the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a degree in geology in 1951. After college, Phil joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in Denver, CO. While home on break from college, Phil met the neighborhood girl, Jakie, who ended up being the first love of his life. They were married on April 4, 1953 in Denver. They enjoyed sixty-seven years of wonderful marriage spent fishing, enjoying time at the beach, traveling on river cruises with dear friends, and being wonderful parents and grandparents. Phil was very active in the Bridgeport Presbyterian Church, especially as a Charter member and Elder. He was especially glad to have attended this year’s Christmas Eve service where he got to see members of his church family after a long absence. During his career he worked for Phillips Petroleum and Consolidated Natural Gas. Upon retirement in 1990, he owned and operated a geologic consulting business for many years. Phil was a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Services are being handled by the Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV. There will be no visitation or formal church service. Burial will take place in the Bridgeport Cemetery with a small family graveside service conducted by Reverend Dr. Jane Ellen Nickell, a close family friend and like a second daughter to Phil and Jakie.
