Obituary of Milford Eugene McVicker
Milford Eugene “Gene” McVicker, 84, of Fairmont passed away June 18, 2021 at home after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 3, 1937 in Marion County, a son of the late Milford Jasper and Ocie Motter McVicker.
Gene was a 1955 graduate of East Fairmont High School and attended Fairmont State College. He was a dedicated Christian and a member of The Baptist Temple where he served as AB Men’s president and on various other committees. While there, he went on many AB Men’s Disaster relief trips and worked tirelessly on the Veteran’s Day crosses at the church. He volunteered for the Soup Opera and The Penny Pincher as well as Meals on Wheels and Marion County Ride to Survive, a service for cancer patients. He served in the peace-time National Guard. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk at both the Fairmont and East Side offices for many years and also worked for S&M Glass. He enjoyed serving as a 4-H leader for the Crossroads 4-H club and as a coach for many youth softball and basketball teams. He also enjoyed traveling the country on several family trips. He loved to bowl with the bowling league at Fairmont Bowling Center, enjoyed his McDonald’s breakfast group, and loved watching WVU football and basketball. He also loved to watch his granddaughter, Taylor, on stage and his grandson, Kiernan, play basketball and soccer.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joyce Powers McVicker; his daughters, Leigh Ann (Michael) Hood of Fairmont and Christy Shaw of Charleston; his grandchildren, Taylor Shaw and Kiernan Hood; his 7 siblings, JoAnn (Dennis) Lake, PA; Carolyn Haught, Jerry (Judy) McVicker, Doug (Mary) McVicker, Larry ( Trudy) McVicker, Pam (Eugene) Pride, all in WV and Cindy (Patrick) Levelle, SC; 2 brothers-in-law, Duncan (Mary Lee) Powers, MS and Michael (Linda) Powers of Mannington. He is also survived by 22 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Paul Powers; his mother-in-law, Esther Powers and his brother-in-law, Robert Haught.

The family has entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV and requests that all visitors wear facial masks and practice social distancing while in attendance. Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Monday, June 21, 2021 from 12 noon until 8PM. The funeral service will be held at The Baptist Temple, 430 Morgantown Avenue, Fairmont, WV on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 11AM with Rev. Dr. Allan Copenhaver, Pastor Kevin Sions, and Pastor John Carnes officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery in Shinnston, WV.
