Obituary of Richard Loye Hackett

Richard Loye Hackett, 84, of Fairmont, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 11, 2021, at his home, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born June 3, 1937 in Ritchie County, WV, the son of the late Everett and Lennie Spiker Hackett, but was raised by his late aunt Annie Hinton. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Wilma Miller Hackett. Richard was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont for over 50 years, and often served as an Usher, as well as serving on the Board of Trustees. He grew up in Ritchie County and attended Harrisville Grade School. He was always proud that he had earned the Golden Horseshoe Award while a student there. He later graduated from Harrisville High School with the Class of 1955 and had helped to organize many of his class reunions. He enjoyed the Harrisville High School all-class reunions and the reunion parades that would annually take place in Harrisville. Richard was a graduate of both Mountain State Business College and Fairmont State University. Richard retired from Monongahela Power Company, with 38 years of service, where he was the Supervisor of Tax and Payroll. He was also the owner and operator of Fairmont Roofing and Siding for many years, and most recently worked as an insurance inspector. He was very active in the community and was a Boy Scout leader for many years. He was awarded the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award due to his dedicated and distinguished service to Mountaineer Area Council scouting. Richard was also very active with the East Fairmont Busy Bee Band and served as Booster President for several years. While a member of the Fairmont Jaycees, he helped with the construction of Consolidated Park, now known as Mary Lou Retton Park. Most recently he served as a commissioner of the Marion County Parks and Recreation Board. He was a member of the Fairmont Masonic Lodge A.F.&A.M. # 157 where he was a past Master, the Osiris Shrine Center, and the Upper Mon-Valley Shrine Club where he served as past President. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his son, Mark and his wife Diana Hackett of Bridgeport, and his daughter, Angela and her husband Chris Toothman of Kingmont, his two special grandsons, Cody Toothman and his fiancé, Ali Cumberland, and Colton Toothman, all of Kingmont. He is also survived by his niece, Dixie Wolfe of Fellowsville, WV, and his great-niece Torrie and her husband D.J. Sova. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his sisters, June Davis and Betty Rogers, and his brother, Sonny Hackett. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, Inc., 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. In accordance with Mr. Hackett’s wishes, cremation services will be held.
