Obituary of Ruth Ann Powell
Ruth Ann Powell, 81, of Bridgeport, WV and formerly of Fairmont, WV died Sunday, December 20, 2020 in the WVU Medicine United Hospital Center. She was born February 22, 1939 in Fairmont, WV a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Powell, JR. and Lela Barb Powell.
Ruth Ann is survived by several cousins including Thomas “Tommy” Hartley & his wife Michelle Hartley of Church Hill, TN, Tammy Hallberg of Davenport, FL, Marcia Powell of Fairmont, WV and Marilyn Evans of Hillard, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a sister Frances Louise Powell, Paternal grandparents Benjamin Franklin Powell Sr., Eula Milan Powell Mercer and a step grandfather William Mercer, Maternal grandparents Otto Verner Barb and Ora Musgrave Barb and cousins Thomas “Tom” & Patricia “Patty” Hartley and Robert L. Powell Jr.
Miss Powell was a retired head librarian and a library science professor at Fairmont State College with 35 years of service. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fairmont, WV. Ruth Ann served as an Elder, Past President of the Women’s Association & Sunshine Committee and was recognized as an Honorary Life Member of the Women’s Association. She was a 1957 graduate of East Fairmont High School, graduated from Fairmont State College & Kent State University and received her master’s degree in library science from West Virginia University. She was a Past President of the Delta Kappa Gamma at Fairmont State College. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 34 of Fairmont, WV.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554.
