Obituary of A. Elizabeth Poe

Elizabeth Toothman Poe, 89, of Monumental passed peacefully from her home to the home of her dear friend Jesus as the sun set on Thursday, February 1, 2024. Born Agnes Elizabeth Toothman on April 2, 1934, at home on Hopewell Road, she was the daughter of the late Guy Lee and Audra Mauk Toothman. A 1952 graduate of East Fairmont High School and Fairmont State College, she loved her role as a primary grade teacher and cherished helping young people to grow through education. She earned Outstanding Teacher of the Year recognition at Morgantown Christian Academy. College sweethearts, she and her husband Daniel Poe were married April 12, 1957, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, after her college graduation, and continued on as sweethearts for the next 67 years until her death. They lived in Ohio and Wisconsin before returning to West Virginia, living at Cheat Lake until residing in the homestead on the Poe family farm in 2000. A member of Victory Baptist Church in Fairmont, where she enjoyed fellowship and friendship, she was previously an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Morgantown, where she and Daniel were leaders of the Super Sixties senior group. She delighted in showing off her room filled with a village of dollhouses she had furnished, and she and Daniel were well-known for wearing patriotic attire to all festive occasions. She often said her motto was, “Give a smile to everyone you meet” and she signed every greeting card with “God loves you!” She is survived by her beloved husband Daniel; sons who were her pride and joy, Jan and wife Tammy Poe of Fairmont and Allen and wife Rocio Poe of Heber City, Utah; grandchildren Christopher Poe of Hawaii; Janalee and Daniel Thorn of Rivesville; Joyanna and Brock Hannah of Bellview; and Joshua and Morgan Poe of Bridgeport; great-grandchildren Torryn and Asher Hannah and Noah Thorn; brothers-in-law Steven and Susannah Poe, and Ed Bunner; and nieces and nephews who recall many happy family times spent with her. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister Wilma Bunner; and brother- and sister-in-law Ned and Judy Poe.
