Obituary of Elizabeth Eleanor Meyer

Elizabeth Eleanor Meyer (née Merrells), passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the Maplewood Nursing Home in Bridgeport, WV. She was born February 11, 1940, to Margaret Miller and William Gladstone Merrells of Bridgeport, West Virginia. She grew up in Bridgeport and graduated from Bridgeport High School, then studied for two years at West Virginia University before obtaining her Physical Therapy degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1962. Throughout her career as a Physical Therapist, she worked at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Wetzel County Hospital, the Wetzel County School Systems, and for Easter Seals. Later in her career she worked for SunBridge Health Systems in Salem, West Virginia. Her passion was always working with children; having worked before even gaining her PT license during summers at Camp Horseshoe in Parsons West Virginia, which hosted camps for children with physical disabilities. She was also passionate about community service, and served on the West Virginia Women’s Commission, the West Virginia Physical Therapy Board, the Marshall County Planning Commission, and was a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women, the Kappa Delta Sorority, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra. Piercing light-blue eyes and wavy blonde hair, passionate laughter, a green thumb, culinary skill and love of entertaining defined her best. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Meyer. She leaves behind three daughters: Christine Swinler of Fairmont, West Virginia, Gretchen Schuerman (Tom) of Richmond, Virginia and Claire Walls (Matt Stevans) of Delray Beach, Florida; nine grandchildren: James, Thunder, Elizabeth, Keegan, Audrey, Fletcher, Bridget, Thomas, and Daisy; and two great-grandchildren: Emilia and Arlo. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 215 East Main Street, Bridgeport, WV. A memorial service will be held in her honor on Saturday, August 26th at 11:00 AM with Reverend Dr. Matthew Paugh officiating at the Bridgeport United Methodist Church, 251 Worthington Drive, Bridgeport, West Virginia.
