Obituary of Alan Harland

Alan Harland,85, of Fairmont, passed away at his residence on Thursday, August 25, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born October 27, 1936 in County Durham, England a son of the late Alfred and Dora Anderson Harland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Gilbert Harland in 2009. Alan originally worked with Gullick Dobson Mining Corporation in England as a Field Service Engineer focusing in the longwall roof support division. In 1980 he was transferred with Gullick Dobson to the United States and continued to work with them as a Sales Engineer/ Service Manager until his retirement in 1996. In retirement, he worked with Joe R. Pyle Auction as a driver until the age of 83. Alan enjoyed golfing in his retirement, especially at Apple Valley golf course, and was a talented woodworker, having built several furniture pieces, cabinets, and the deck on the back of his home. He is survived by his son, Paul and his wife Judy Harland of West Blocton, AL, his grandson, Andrew and his wife Jenna Toothman of Fairmont, and his great-grandsons, Mason and Max Toothman. In addition to his parents and wife, Alan was preceded in death by his daughter, Tracey Jayne Harland in 2021. The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice and his special caregivers, Brenda and Angie for the loving care they have provided over the years.
