Obituary of Cheryl L. Shelton

Cheryl L. Shelton, 70, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on March 28, 1956 in Fairmont, the daughter of the late Ernest E. and Ruth L. Yost Morgan. Cheryl is survived by her husband Edward W. Shelton. She was a proud 1974 graduate of East Fairmont High School and was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served in the Primary Organization. Cheryl worked as a Collection Agent with Fairmont Federal Credit Union for 35 years, until retiring. She was proud to help her grandson with his Eagle Scout Award by joining him on his 20-Mile Hike. Cheryl was also the past president of the Community Outreach for Mental Health. She enjoyed the rails to trails, traveling the 48 lower states, gardening, cheering for the Pittsburgh Pirates, decorating for the different holiday seasons, and hosting countless family gatherings. In addition to her husband, Cheryl is survived by her children, Lewis Knight and his wife Rae of Fairmont, Oliver Shelton of Fairmont, Stacey Sollars and her husband Ken of Fairmont, and Krandl Slingerland and her husband Peter of Valley Head, WV; sister, Susan Layman and her husband Rex of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Matthew Sollars and his companion Madison, Wesley Knight, Eric Knight, and Aaron Sollars, all of Fairmont; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Lee Morgan. The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Friends and family will be received on Thursday, July 23, 2026 from 3 pm until 8 pm and again on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 10 am until 11 am. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Friday at 11 am with Bishop Dave Cox officiating. A service of committal will follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum, Fairmont.
