Obituary of James Elwood Phillips
James Elwood Phillips, 82, of Fairmont, passed away at his home on Sunday, June 21, 2026. He was born in Philippi, WV on February 17, 1944, a son to the late Norman James Elwood and Kathleen Deloris Drain Phillips. James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Leona Dennis Phillips.
He is survived by his son, James “Bim” E. Phillips II and his wife Dr. Ressie Phillips, his siblings, William Lee Phillips, and Diana Sue Toothman. His son, Bim would also like to acknowledge step-grandchildren, Eric Palmer and his son Cody, Tracey Palmer, and Brian Adamson, as well as his long-time friend, Paul Nestor. James is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by his son, David Wayne Phillips, and his brothers, Howard Thomas Phillips and Gary Dwayne Phillips.
James was a retired coal miner for Easter Federated Coal Company, Federal #2 with over 26 years of dedicated service.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home on Thursday from 12 noon until 2p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 2p.m. with Pastor Gary Steele officiating.
