Obituary of Robert "Buck" Harry Thompson

Robert “Buck” Harry Thompson. 95, of Fairmont, surrounded by family peacefully passed away at his home on Thursday, June 18, 2026. He was born on September 16, 1930, the son of the late Harry Dale and Mabel Cain Thompson. In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Lee Smith Thompson. He is survived by his children, Mark Thompson and his fiancé Kathie Forman of Morgantown, Lynn Talbert of Fairmont, Marsha Thompson and her friend Brenda Hedges of Frederick, Maryland, and Janet Floyd and her husband Brian of Fairmont. Buck is also survived by his grandchildren, Alex Thompson and his fiancé Brittany Dunbar of Rockledge, Florida, Zachary Thompson of Richmond, Virginia, Ryan and his wife Lauren Talbert of Fairmont, Morgan Talbert and his partner Valerie Castro of Fairmont, Molly Talbert and her partner Brian Wireback of Fairmont, Michael Floyd of Fairmont, Hannah Demyon and her husband Cole of Fairmont, and Andrew Floyd of Fairmont, his great-grandchildren, Killian, Finley, and Petra Talbert. Buck is also survived by his nephews, Earl McConnell, Jr. and his wife Martha and their daughter Kate Lake and her husband Matt of Georgia, Patrick McConnell of Fairmont, and Buck’s close companion, Martha Hall of Fairmont. In addition to his parents and wife, Buck was preceded in death by his sister, Millee McConnell and her husband Earl Sr. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army, Buck was the owner and president of W.S. Thomas Transfer, Inc. and was a longtime member and trustee at Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont. He was a proud East Fairmont High School graduate with the class of 1949 and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from Fairmont State College in 1953. Buck was generous with his time and was involved in several organizations throughout life including: Jaycees President, Elks Lodge member, past president of the Rotary Club, former president of the Fairmont State Alumni Association, Fairmont General Hospital Board president, City National Bank Chairman, past president of the WV Motor Truck Association, and officer of the American Trucking Association, past president of the North Central Regional Airport, and served on the board for the Union Mission. Buck was a devoted friend, respected entrepreneur, dedicated community leader, semi-professional tennis player, a skillful pilot, a fierce competitor, a trusted father figure, a gentle grandchildren’s dentist, pickleball champion, playful Papa and Gramps, perfect patriarch, and an inspiring father. Memorial donations may be made in Buck’s memory to Central United Methodist Church at 301 Fairmont Ave, Fairmont, WV 26554, or Greater Love Family Outreach Ministries, 200 Frederick Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to his extraordinary caregivers for their dedication and compassion, and sincere appreciation to WVU Medicine Hospice for their guidance and support. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Family and friends will be received in the funeral home on Sunday, June 21, 2026 from 1p.m. until 7p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, June 22, 2026 at Central United Methodist Church, 301 Fairmont Ave, Fairmont, WV 26554, from 10a.m. until 11a.m. A funeral service will be held for Buck at Central UMC on Monday at 11a.m. with Reverend Brad Bennett and Reverend Junius Lewis officiating.
