Obituary of Carolyn "Janene" Brumage Hays
Carolyn “Janene” Brumage Hays, 82, of Fairmont, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026. She was born on March 18, 1944, a daughter to the late O. Howard and Margaret Powell Brumage. She is survived by her loving husband of over 18 years, David Charles Hays. Janene and David were high school sweethearts and were previously engaged soon after high school. Life took them in different directions until they reconnected later in life to marry the love of their lives.
She is survived by her children, Mark A. Cook and his wife Jennifer of Pleasant Valley, Tracy Houser and her husband John of Tennessee, David Hays Jr. of Oklahoma, and Candace Davisson of Florida. Janene is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and her sister Billie Kins of Beach Bottom, WV.
In addition to her parents, Janene was preceded in death by her daughter, Michelle Smith, her granddaughter, Amanda Dillow, and her brothers, Don and John Brumage.
Janene was a 1962 graduate of Wellsburg High School. Right out of high school Janene worked at Westinghouse in Fairmont. She retired as a school bus driver for the Marion County Board of Education with 31 years of dedicated service and also was a realtor for White Real Estate in Fairmont. She was a Christian by faith and attended local Methodist and Baptists churches. Presentation was very important to Janene. She took great pride in her appearance, her home, and her yard. She enjoyed spending time surrounded by her close friends and family. Janene always said, “God is always in control” and she always found the good in people she met.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, June 18, 2026 from 1p.m. until 2p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday at 2p.m. with Pastor Jay Linaburg as celebrant.
