Obituary of Nelly Velarde de Rendon
Nelly Velarde de Rendon of Fairmont, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026. She was born on April 18, 1929, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, a daughter of the late Jose Anibal Velarde and Amelia Toledo de Velarde.
Nelly the first seventy years of her life in Guayaquil, before moving to and moved to Miami, Florida where she lived with her son and his family for seventeen years. She later moved to Fairmont to live with her daughter.
Nelly attended the University in Guayaquil, Ecuador where she earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She devoted thirty-eight years of her life to education as a respected teacher of Language and Literature in Guayaquil.
She is survived by a son Alfredo Rendon Velarde and his wife Patricia of Florida, and Mario Rendon Velarde and his wife Jenny of Florida and by her daughter Jeanina Butcher Ice of Fairmont.
She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Alfredo Rendon and his wife Rosemary of Florida; Maria Gabriela Knab and her husband Domenic of South Carolina; Valeria Rendon and her husband Alberto of Florida; Maria Jose Rendon and her husband Burr of Maryland; Bradley Butcher and his wife Patty of Pennsylvania; Nicholas Butcher of Fairmont; and Kenny Butcher of Pennsylvania.
Nelly is also survived by her cherished great-grandchildren Eric, Luis and Sebastian Rendon of Florida; Avery and Arielle Fong of Maryland; Russell and Zack Knab of South Carolina; and Oliver, Wesley, and Perry Butcher of Pennsylvania.
She is further survived by a sister Gloria Pelosi and her husband Osvaldo of Florida; her sister-in-law, Teresa Luque de Velarde of Ecuador; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Luis Rendon Briones, brothers Anibal Velarde Toledo, Eduardo Velarde Toledo, son-in-law, Martin A. Butcher, son-in-law James “Jim” Ice.
Nelly had been a resident at John Manchin's Senior Health Care for more than five years The family would like to express gratitude to the staff for the love and kindness, and compassionate care they provided for their beloved mother. They would like to extend special thanks to Dottie Carpenter, who lovingly cared for Nelly, both at home and at the nursing home for eight years. Dottie has truly been a blessing and a treasure in their lives.
The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont. Friends will be received on Friday, May 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11 a.m. with Father Kishore Varaparla presiding. A private committal service will be held a later date.
