Obituary of Ned Owen Merrifield, Jr.

Ned Owen Merrifield, Jr., 94, of Fairmont passed away on April 9, 2026. He was born February 20, 1932, a son of the late Ned Owen and Helen Merrifield. Ned served in the United States Navy in Korea from 1952-1956, wearing his Navy ball cap whenever he would go out. He appreciated the “Thank You For Your Service” acknowledgements he received. Ned was a graduate of Fairmont State College. He began his career with Monongalia Power in 1960 as an assistant test engineer at Rivesville Power Station and later became manager at Fort Martin Power Station in Morgantown. He retired in 1995. Ned is survived by his wife of 43 years Mary Ann, son Ned Merrifield III, wife Susan, brother Richard, wife Lillian. Grandson Wesley Merrifield, (Liz), granddaughter Tarrah (Justin) Stewart. Step-granddaughter Cory Ann (Forrest) Toegel and stepson Tyler Whirtley (Rebecca, fiancé). Ned was blessed with six great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Preston, Beau, Ellie, Amelia, and Hailey. Lisa Michele Whirtley, stepdaughter passed away in 2023. A private graveside service will be held at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Assembly of God, 70 Maranatha Dr., Fairmont, WV 26554.
