Obituary of Daniel C. Poe

Daniel Clayton Poe, 90, slipped away before sunrise from his home at Meadow Cove Farm in Monumental on Sunday, November 2, 2025. Born July 15, 1935, into a working farm family, he was the oldest son of Howard W. and Jeannette Clayton Poe of Meadowdale in Marion County. A 1953 graduate of East Fairmont High School, where he was active in marching band and Scouts, he earned a degree in education from Fairmont State College, and was a teacher and principal in the school systems of St. Clairsville and Hilliard, Ohio, and at Maranantha Baptist University in Wisconsin. In the summers, he worked as a commercial bus driver, chauffeuring a number of country music stars, and he was a city bus driver in Morgantown before his retirement. College sweethearts, he and Elizabeth Toothman of Hopewell Road were married April 12, 1957, in St. Clairsville, Ohio, after her college graduation, and continued on as sweethearts for the next 67 years until her death in February, 2024. They lived in Ohio and Wisconsin before returning to West Virginia, living at Cheat Lake until residing in the homestead on the Poe family farm in 2000. A member of Victory Baptist Church in Fairmont, where he enjoyed fellowship and friendship, he was previously an active member of Faith Baptist Church in Morgantown, where he and Elizabeth were leaders of the Super Sixties senior group. A U.S. Army veteran, he was active in driving veterans to meetings and appointments and made countless batches of wacky cake and chocolate chip cookies for youth camps in our area. His faith in Christ and his love for America were foremost in his thoughts, his actions and his colorful wardrobe. He is survived by a family in which he took immense pride: sons Jan and wife Tammy Poe of Fairmont and Allen and wife Rocio Poe of Heber City, Utah; grandchildren Christopher Poe of Hawaii; Janalee and Daniel Thorn of Rivesville; Joyanna and Brock Hannah of Bellview; and Joshua and Morgan Poe of Bridgeport; great-grandchildren Torryn and Asher Hannah and Noah and Jonah Thorn; brother Steven and wife Susannah Poe; brother-in-law Ed Bunner; and nieces and nephews Shelly Poe, Jill Poe, Matthew Poe, Virginia Andrews and Katherine Brown. He is preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth; his parents; his brother and sister-in-law Ned and Judy Poe; and his sister-in-law Wilma Bunner.
