Obituary of Betsy Darlene Morris Howvalt
Betsy Darlene Morris Howvalt, 74, of Rivesville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at the Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown. She was born on June 15, 1950 in Fairmont, a daughter of the late Charles E. and Almira E. Eddy Morris. Betsy is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, James “Jim” H. Howvalt, Jr.
Betsy was a proud 1968 graduate of Rivesville High School and a Methodist by faith. She worked as a homemaker in her own home and later worked in security at the Federal Bureau of Investigations in Clarksburg.
Betsy was an avid WVU fan, following both men’s and women’s basketball teams, a wonderful cook, and a friend to all who knew her. In her earlier years, she enjoyed bowling with Jim in the Fairmont bowling league. Betsy and Jim made many wonderful memories together, including their special time together visiting casinos, especially the Meadows. Betsy found her greatest joy in spending time with her family. When her children were young, she was known as “Hot Wheels Howvalt”, as she was always picking up one child and dropping off another to all their activities they were involved in. She loved watching her grandchildren in their various sporting events throughout the years. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and “Mamaw”.
In addition to her husband, Betsy is survived by her three children, Melynda DeWitt and her husband Dave of Lancaster, SC, Melyssa Hastings and her husband Steven of Stonewood, WV, and James “Jimmy” Howvalt III of Fairmont, five grandchildren, Hayden Stewart and his wife Mecca, Cameron Stewart and his companion Haley, Alexis DeWitt and her companion Grant, Adrienne Howvalt, and Matthew Howvalt. Betsy was one of twelve siblings; surviving her are her five siblings, Sidney Morris and his wife Shirley of Fairmont, Dollie Fleming and her husband Fred of Morgantown, Charles Morris of North Ridgeville, OH, Kay Davis of Monongah, and David Morris of Baxter, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Betsy was preceded in death by six siblings, Robert Morris, Joe Morris, Patty Shamrock, Peggy Meffe, Larry Morris, and Molly White.
