Obituary of Joan Bray Duvall

Mrs. Joan Bray Duvall of Rock Lake Community passed away on February 22, 2022 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late James Lonnie and Eulah Gerard Bray. She was preceded in death by her two husbands Richard F. Boyles and Harold “Deacon” Duvall. She is survived by a daughter Tracey Boyles Linn and husband Michael; a brother Eugene Bray and wife Donna; her God daughter and niece that was like her second daughter Terri Bray Nuzum and her husband Bill; many special nieces, nephews and cousins whom she loved to entertain for at her home. She is also survived by a sister-in-law Nancy Bray; special friends Dick Hepler and Val and Carl Gettings and her beloved faithful dog Millie. She was also preceded in death by two brothers James and Jerry Bray. Joan was active in education and civic organizations throughout her adult life. She started teaching in a one-room school and moved on to teach at Montana Mines, Central and East Park Schools. She was principal at Fleming Elementary School for ten years, at Pleasant Valley for one year before moving to East Park Middle School where she was principal until her retirement. Following retirement, she worked on staff at West Virginia University in the teacher education department. While employed by the Marion County school system, she was a member of the county, state and national education associations and served on the executive board of the county association. She was also a member of the national, state, and county principal’s association and at one time was president of the local group. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fairmont where she was blessed with a loving church family. For many years, she was active with her church and served as the church moderator. She was also a member of the East Fairmont High School Foundation. She was a graduate of Leadership Marion and previously served on the Action Marion board of directors. Joan was a resident of Rock Lake Community for over sixty-four years. She served on the Rock Lake Board many times as well as president of the board. Rock Lake provided her great enjoyment of spending time with friends and neighbors and enjoying the social events and occasions. She will be missed by her family and friends as they remember her love for others and her healthy, vibrant life until the day she passed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554 or the Marion County Humane Society, 2731 Locust Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554. Friends will be received at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV on Friday from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM and on Saturday from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Avenue, Fairmont, WV. The funeral service will be celebrated in the church on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Kevin Aldana presiding.
