Obituary of Richard Lee Martin

Richard Lee “Dick” Martin, 88, of Barrackville, WV, passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016, at the Genesis Fairmont Campus Tygart Center. He was born September 3, 1927, in Fairmont, a son of the late Frank and Carrie Shaffer Martin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie L. Woodyard Martin on July 17, 1982. Dick was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and a veteran of the United States Navy. He was the youngest of the five Martin brothers who all served at the same time during World War II. He was a member of the Bethesda Baptist Church in Barrackville for more than 60 years, where he had served as a trustee. He retired from the Rivesville Power Station in September 1986 and was a faithful attendee of the retiree luncheons for many years. He loved the town of Barrackville and all his friends and neighbors within it, often saying “Barrackville is the best place to live.” He remarked many times that he had a blessed life. He loved traveling to spend time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He walked at Morris Park or the mall when weather was bad, worked on his cars and trucks, and enjoyed seeing his friends daily for his evening meal at Say Boy’s Restaurant. Survivors include his daughter, Linda Logan of Mesa, AZ; his son Ronald L. and his wife Veronica Martin of Gilbert, AZ; grandchildren Eric Straight of Las Vegas, NV, Shannon (Tim) Brimmer of Gilbert, AZ, Bethany (John) O’Dwyer of Maple Grove, MN, Heather Martin of Nashville, TN; great-grandchildren Brittany and Cassidy Brimmer and Sean, Brian and Evan O’Dwyer; and sister-in-law, Thomasena (Raymond) St. Pierre. He is also survived by nieces and nephews Mary Margaret (Don) Plum, Independence, WV, Thomas (Sharon) Martin, Atlanta, GA, Denny (Becky) Martin, Colfax, WV, Fred (Diane) Martin, Fairmont, WV, Greg (Robin) St. Pierre, Fallston, MD, and Michele (Mark) Keefover, Fairmont, WV. Dick’s children would like to express their love and gratitude to Michele Keefover and Denny Martin for the care and devotion to their Uncle Dick. You were a blessing to him and his children will forever be grateful. In addition to his parents and his wife, Dick was preceded in death by son-in-law, Daniel J. Logan, Jr.; brothers Howard, Thomas, Max, and Oliver Martin; sister Juanita Victor; nephew Robert (Bobby) Fullen; sister-in-law Leaschen Doggett; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Thomas and Florence Woodyard. Friends and family may visit the Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, from 2PM until 8PM. Mr. Martin will lie in state at the Bethesda Baptist Church, 502 Pike Street, Barrackville, WV, on Thursday, September 8, 2016, from 10AM until 11AM. Funeral services will be held in the church on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at 11AM with Rev. Dr. David Cyphers officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover, WV.
